Do any of you have the Factory service intervals for our S4's? If so, what does it say about timing chain service intervals. My understanding of these chains is they were installed on engines to add durability and reduce the need for servicing (like timing belts required). Any help would be appreciated.
The timing chain is the crucial link between the top and bottom of your engine. It connects the crankshaft and the camshaft together so that your transmission turns in harmony with your engine. Without that connection, you lose control of your wheels. Most Volkswagen timing chains are made to last at least 120,000 miles.
Slide the new belt in place. When installing the new Tensioner, make sure that the rear tab fits completely inside the block. Now, set the tension: Tight barely the Tensioner nut. Using an Allen wrench, turn clockwise the center of the Tensioner until the notch is aligned with the highlighted dot. When you hear of chain failure in the S4 motor it is in fact the cam adjusters, chain tensioners, and chain guides that wear out / break. There have been no issues to our knowledge of an actual chain snapping. The 4.2 found in b6/b7 s4's uses a timing chain that has to be replaced at 100k. The older b5 2.8tt motor uses belts that have to be done rought every 50-60k if i'm not mistaken. Both motors have to be pulled to replace these parts.
